FOUNDER OF MEDAN CITY FROM KARO
The founder of Medan is Guru Patimpus Sembiring Pelawi, a Karo figure who lived in the 16th century. He established a village later known as Medan Putri Village at the confluence of Deli River and Babura River.
Guru Patimpus Sembiring Pelawi (born in Aji Jahe, Taneh Karo, ca 1540–1 July 1590) was the founder of Medan City, North Sumatra, Indonesia, which was taken from the word “madan” meaning “healed” in the Karo language.
Before Guru Patimpus Sembiring Pelawi embraced Islam, he was a person who had the faith of Pemena. Teacher Patimpus Sembiring Pelawi married a daughter of Raja Pulo Brayan and had two sons, each named Kolok and Kecik.
After getting married, Guru Patimpus Sembiring Pelawi and his wife opened a forest area between River Deli and River Babura which later became Village Medan. The date of this event is usually referred to as July 1, 1590, which is now celebrated as the anniversary of the City of Medan, the birth day of the City of Madan, and the anniversary of Medan.
